Common issues found with heating oil tanks

The above pictured tank has several problems. Its base is supported by wood instead of concrete, it is a single-skin type and is installed next to a wood shed with no fireproofing, and it has suffered sun bleaching which makes it brittle and liable to cracking.

The tanks pictured above and below show classic signs of water damage. Over time, water may leak into the bund wall ('bunding' is the outer containing wall) which causes further damage when the water pushes the inner tank upward.
This breaks the outlet seal and allows oil and water to mix, which presents further problems. The tank is then beyond repair.

Tank Replacements

Above, an oil tank installed to current regulations allowing sufficient clearance from the boundary and fence so not to require fire protection.
The tank sits on a purpose built concrete slab with 300mm clearance all round. A paper oil filter has been fitted and the oil line has been sleeved.
